Scrum values for scrum roles (Part 2): Scrum Master

The scrum master’s accountability is to establish scrum as defined in the Scrum guide. The scrum master has responsibilities towards the development team, product owner, and the organization, this makes it even more important for the scrum master to understand and live by scrum values.

In the first part of this blog series, we discussed how developers can live and breathe scrum values to maximize the impact of scrum adoption. Let’s explore how can a scrum master live and breathe the scrum values throughout the journey :

Courage:

  1. The scrum master must be courageous to help the team create transparency around the work being done
  2. The scrum master must be courageous to address the emotional flow in the team
  3. The scrum master must be courageous in showing low tolerance towards organizational impediments
  4. The scrum master must be courageous to protect the team from external factors

Commitment:

  1. The scrum master must be committed to enabling the team to move in the direction of continuous improvement
  2. The scrum master must be committed to promoting and supporting scrum adoption in the organization
  3. The scrum master must be committed to the service of the team, the product owner, and the organization
  4. The scrum master must be committed to improving the environment in which the team operates

Focus:

  1. The scrum master must help the team focus on the goals of the scrum team.
  2. The scrum master must help the team focus on the alignment with the product goal.
  3. The scrum master must help the team focus on continuous improvement.
  4. The scrum master must help the product owner focus on the Product backlog management

Openness:

  1. The scrum master coaches teams to be open during daily scrum to help create transparency around the work being done and impediments for the team.
  2. The scrum master encourages openness with stakeholders so that team can seek constructive feedback
  3. The scrum master encourages openness within the scrum team, helping the team to create a forecast for the sprint
  4. The scrum master encourages openness during sprint retrospectives to help the team improve continuously.

Respect:

  1. The scrum master should foster an environment where people respect each other’s individualities.
  2. The scrum master should foster a respectful environment where people can share their ideas
  3. The scrum master should coach the team to respect the accountabilities in the scrum framework.
  4. The scrum master should respect the scrum framework and the rules that bind it
